Gondry gives us all the pieces of the story and makes us put it together. The weird technology that is thrown at us that can supposedly erase memories with no surgical procedure reinforces the fact that we don’t really know what’s going on, that is until the end of course. This out of order style of directing contributes to the sort of bubble like world effect that is felt throughout the film. The movie begins as the ending and certain events leave us in question, and won’t be answered until later on. Gondry’s world feels somewhat off, there is an overarching feeling of dismay. In “The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” Michel Gondry takes us to a world where memories can be erased for the purpose of getting through a tough breakup.
